Maryland Club Open 2025 Delivers Thrills in Both Women’s and Men’s Draws
The 2025 Maryland Club Open featured a $15,000 women’s draw and a $15,000 men’s Challenger, part of the Cache_Seven Challenger Tour, with equal prize money across both events. Defending champions Georgina Stoker and Nikki Todd led the women’s field, while a new pairing of Kayley Leonard and Line Hansen was seeded second. On the men’s side, Clinton Leeuw and Jaymie Haycocks of the New York Athletic Club topped the draw, followed by second seeds Cole Osborne and John White, former college teammates at Franklin & Marshall.
Founded in 2003 by Maryland Club Racquets Director Andrew Cordova, the Maryland Club Open celebrates its 16th year in 2025 and has become a centerpiece of the club’s squash program. The tournament has hosted numerous events alongside the professional draws, including the first-ever SDA Annual Awards in 2015. Pro-Am events continue to be a club favorite, giving members the chance to play alongside top professionals. Leadership from inaugural Chairman Doug Hoffberger through current squash Chairman Dave Rosen and event Chairman Hugh McGuirk has helped the tournament maintain its prestigious reputation. The Maryland Club’s three-court facility provided an excellent setting for fast-paced, high-level action.
In the women’s draw, Stoker and Todd successfully defended their title. They battled past rising stars Rachel Mashek and Olivia Walsh 3-1 in the semifinals, with Mashek’s shot-making and Walsh’s court coverage pushing the tour veterans to play at their best. In the final, Stoker/Todd faced Leonard and Hansen, who recovered from a slow start to contest a tightl second game beofre taking an exciting third through sharp, precise play. Hansen’s near-errorless performance and strategic rallies set up multiple opportunities for Leonard, and the fourth game came down to a simultaneous game ball and match ball, ending with a decisive winner from Todd to reclaim the title.
The men’s draw proved unpredictable as both the #1 and #2 seeds exited in the quarterfinals. Top seeds Clinton Leeuw and Jaymie Haycocks fell to Sam Fenwick and Chris Longman, who were then defeated by rising star Adham Madi and his partner Kush Kumar. Kumar, a two-time Challenger winner last season, teamed with Madi, who reached his second Challenger final of the season after a victory in New York in September.
In the bottom half of the draw, Yash Bhargava and Lucas Rousselet upset Osborne and White before losing a five-game semifinal to John Russell and Colin West. Bhargava and Rousselet demonstrated great synergy, with complementary styles that made them a formidable team. The men’s final was a thrilling back and forth battle. Russell’s experience and precision combined with West’s pace ultimately overcame Madi’s frantic retrieving and Kumar’s soft volley drops, securing the championship in an exciting conclusion to the tournament.
The 2025 Maryland Club Open was a true celebration of squash, bringing together veteran champions, up and coming talent, and the lively ProAm matches that make this tournament such a special highlight on the SDA Tour.
