Kayley Leonard & Maria Elena Ubina celebrated their partnerships second professional doubles title together at the Westchester Country Club Pro Doubles, Sunday, December 5, in New York.
Leonard, world No. 2, and Ubina, world No. 12, opened up their tournament as the two seeds with a three-game victory over Julie Cerullo & Victoria Simmonds.
In the top half of the draw, South African top seeds Lume & Elani Landman fended off Philadelphia Pro Doubles champions Lauren West & Georgina Stoker 15-14, 15-9, 15-10 to set up a final against Leonard & Ubina.
The final ended in unfortunate circumstances, as Lume Landman sustained an injury and was forced to concede the match in the second game 13-15, 3-12.
“Kayley and I were so happy to make it to the final match in such a competitive and exciting atmosphere,” Ubina said. “The level of play was incredibly high and we were having so much fun competing against Lume and Elani. We were so sad that Lume had to pull out due to an injury, but she handled it with grace and was a great sport.”
Leonard & Ubina add their Westchester title to the season-opening University Club Open in October, and look forward to more success on the tour in 2022.
“The past few months have been a fun ride for me and Kayley and it has been great to get back on court with such a good friend and teammate,” Ubina said. “Hopefully we can keep up this momentum and continue to see more success in the future.”
The tour resumes in the new year with the MFS Boston Pro-Am, January 28-30.
