2012 Potter Cup hero Todd Harrity and his Princeton teammate Taylor Tutrone rose superior to a strong 20-team field this past weekend at the Racquet Club Of Philadelphia, host venue for the Intercollegiate Doubles tournament. Harrity, the senior captain whose victory at No. 1 clinched Princeton’s 5-4 win over Trinity College in the Intercollegiate Team Championship (ending Trinity’s 13-year run) this past February, partnered Tutrone to a four-game final-round triumph over top seeds Andrew McGuinness and Hunter Beck of the Naval Academy, a match which swung on the Tigers’ ability to win a pivotal third-game tiebreaker that preceded a convincing 15-6 close-out fourth game. It was a vindicatory moment for Harrity, who as a sophomore had seen the 2-1, 10-3 advantage that he and Kelly Shannon had amassed collapse in the face of a 9-0 rally against them on the part the eventual winners, McGuinness’s older brother Trevor McGuinness and his Penn teammate Porter Drake. The collegiate championship is part of the SDA’s tour schedule for the 2012-13 season, since the Association now has a membership category for college players, who will even receive SDA ranking points for their performance in this tournament.
In the Mixed Doubles, Penn’s Colleen Fehm, who won this event last year with the now-graduated Trevor McGuinness, teamed up with Daniel Judd to earn top honors, while the Women’s Doubles was held as a round-robin, with Trinity College representatives Ashley Tidman and Natalie Babjuova being declared the winners through a tiebreaker formula after each team lost at least one match.
