Smith And Gould Win Jim Bentley Cup On Simultaneous-Championship-Point

Trailing two games to love in a rare SDA final between a pair of first-time partnerships, Ben Gould and Jonny Smith conjured up an extraordinary mid-match turnaround and rallied to a hair-raising 14-15 10-15 15-4 15-7 15-14 victory Monday evening to win the 40th annual Jim Bentley Cup, hosted as always by the Cambridge Club in downtown Toronto. It marked the fourth Bentley Cup in the last six years for Gould, as well as the first pro title for Smith (who back-hand cross-dropped a winner into the front-right nick on that final exchange), while Stout, the current world rackets champion, was playing in his first SDA final and Leach, who turned 40 during the tournament weekend, has now reached five Bentley Cup finals without ever hoisting the trophy. Mudge And Gould Successfully Defend Big Apple Open Crown

Top seeds Damien Mudge and Ben Gould were ruthlessly efficient in capturing the $20,000 Big Apple Open, hosted as always by the New York Athletic Club. After dropping the third game of what to that point had been a highly competitive quarterfinal match against Jonny Smith and Greg Park, they blitzed through the 15-3 fourth and never looked back, defeating Paul Price and Clive Leach (who one round earlier had rallied from two-love down against John Russell and John White) in a well-contested but straight-set semi and rising superior in the final to second seeds Manek Mathur and Yvain Badan, who played wonderfully well virtually throughout the immensely high-paced hour-long Monday-evening match which however wound up with a fairly convincing 15-8, 9 and 11 stat line. Mudge And Gould Retain St. Louis Open Crown

Forced to a fifth game in their semifinal round against a pair of first-time partners who had rampaged through the fourth 15-7, top-seeded two-time St. Louis Open defending champions Damien Mudge and Ben Gould rose to that severe Saturday-afternoon challenge by subduing Manek Mathur and Viktor Berg 15-9, then pressed on with a 15-8, 10 and 14 victory several hours later in the final against Paul Price and Clive Leach. Mudge And Gould Capture Maryland Club Open

Picking up where they left off at the end of last season, top seeds Damien Mudge and Ben Gould christened the brand-new Squash Doubles Association (SDA) tour in style by charging to victory this past weekend in the eighth annual $20,000 Maryland Club Open. In so doing, Mudge and Gould won their 20th tournament in 21 attempts over the last two-plus seasons, though the stern challenge they received in a sensational route-going (12-15 15-13 15-13 12-15 15-7) Sunday morning final from second seeds Manek Mathur and Yvain Badan constitutes a compelling augury of a rivalry that well may define the entire upcoming 2012-13 campaign. Princeton Stars Todd Harrity And Taylor Tutrone Capture Intercollegiate Doubles Crown

2012 Potter Cup hero Todd Harrity and his Princeton teammate Taylor Tutrone rose superior to a strong 20-team field this past weekend at the Racquet Club Of Philadelphia, host venue for the Intercollegiate Doubles tournament. Harrity, the senior captain whose victory at No. 1 clinched Princeton’s 5-4 win over Trinity College in the Intercollegiate Team Championship (ending Trinity’s 13-year run) this past February, partnered Tutrone to a four-game final-round triumph over top seeds Andrew McGuinness and Hunter Beck of the Naval Academy, a match which swung on the Tigers’ ability to win a pivotal third-game tiebreaker that preceded a convincing 15-6 close-out fourth game.
