In a taut 90-minute match three of whose four games were tied at 13-all, second seeds James Stout and Greg McArthur edged out top seeds John Russell and John White 15-14 13-15 15-9 15-13 Sunday afternoon in the final round of the 11th annual $10,000 Graham Cup, hosted as always by the Germantown Cricket Club in suburban Philadelphia. This was the first Challenger tournament of the season, and players had to be ranked out of the top 12 at the entry deadline to be eligible, a change from past years when the cut-off had been at No. 8. Continuing their recent dominance after an unexpectedly rocky mid-winter stretch, Damien Mudge and Ben Gould roared to victory this past weekend in the $20,000 inaugural Baltimore Cup, hosted by the Baltimore Country Club, losing the 15-14 first game in their opening match against Graham Bassett and Imran Khan and then running off nine straight games, including a 15-11, 11 and 11 final today at the expense of Greg Park and Jonny Smith.
